Herbalist Sebastian Kneipp once said that growing Sage in your garden is like having your own pharmacy at hand. Some research suggests it helps with long-term memory, creative thinking, and attention span. Sage's botanical name comes from the Latin word "salvere", which — to no one’s surprise — means, "to be saved." Sage is my savior, its scent, my origin story.
There are over 900 species of sage worldwide, with 19 of them having their origins in California — growing along the Pacific Coast, crossing valleys, and threading their way up our mountain slopes. Among these native species are Hummingbird Sage, Pitcher Sage, Black Sage, Purple Sage, Mexican Purple Sage, and White Sage — all currently growing wild at the Estate after a Winter’s rain.
When Flamingo Estate started making products in the Goat Shed they mixed Sage into everything. They crushed it up and poured it into wax, fossilizing that feeling into our very first candle. They mixed essential oils of Purple Sage into their first homemade soap and body wash, and each shower became a daily sensuous ritual. They doubled the amount of Sage essential oils. Then they doubled it again. It is a magical thing.
